Market Insights: Inflation Data, Earnings, and Key Market Moves

This week, all eyes are on inflation, with the U.S. producer price index (PPI) kicking things off on Tuesday and the consumer price index (CPI) following on Wednesday. Investors are closely watching these numbers to gauge the Federal Reserve’s next move, with speculation split between a 50 or 25 basis point cut in September.

Tuesday’s PPI is expected to show modest monthly gains, with a 0.2% rise predicted for both the headline and core figures. This will set the stage for Wednesday’s CPI, where any surprises could sway market sentiment significantly.

U.S. stock futures are up early Tuesday, reflecting cautious optimism. The Dow futures rose by 84 points, the S&P 500 climbed 20 points, and the Nasdaq gained 104 points. Monday’s market was mixed, with the Dow falling 0.4%, the S&P 500 ending flat, and the Nasdaq edging up 0.2%.

Corporate earnings also remain in focus, with Home Depot’s results being a highlight on Tuesday. Investors will be looking for insights into consumer spending trends, especially given recent economic data indicating some softness.

In other news, former President Donald Trump returned to the social media platform X after a three-year hiatus, marking a notable moment in his campaign as he attempts to regain momentum ahead of the 2024 election. This comes as institutional investors returned to Wall Street last week, with nearly $6 billion in stock inflows reported by Bank of America.

However, crude prices slipped on Tuesday, breaking a five-day winning streak, as concerns about global demand growth outweighed the recent rally fueled by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Despite gains of over 3% on Monday, both U.S. crude (WTI) and Brent benchmarks dropped around 0.4% early Tuesday.
